Mark Webber held off a hard-fighting Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone Circuit to win the F1 British Grand Prix on Sunday, marking the second time in as many races that a Red Bull driver finished on top.
Webber quickly asserted himself in the first lap to bolt ahead despite starting from the second grid behind Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton of McLaren tried to challenge Webber but the Red Bull driver proved too fast. Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg came in third 21.3 seconds behind, with defending champion Jenson Button a very close fourth, just .6 seconds further back.
Rubens Barrichello of Williams-Cosworth and Kamui Kobayashi in his BMW landed fifth and sixth, respectively. Pole-setter Vettel, who won the European Grand Prix last month, recovered from an early pit stop to change tires to salvage seventh place. Vettel was followed by Adrian Sutil of Force India and former champion Michael Schumacher.
Hamilton, who finished second for the second-straight race, still leads the overall standings with 145 points followed by McLaren teammate Button at 133 points. Webber traded places with Vettel with 128 and 121 points, respectively while Fernando Alonso, who finished a disappointing 14th place, rounds out the top five with 98 points.
