Italian netter Francesca Schiavone claimed the Women’s Singles title of the 2010 French Open.
The 29 year old athlete became the first Italian to ever win a Grand Slam title. She also became the second oldest woman to claim a first major title. Ann Jones was 30 when she had her first Grand Slam title at the 1969 Wimbledon.
This is Schiavone’s second title this year and the fourth in her career.
“I always believe in myself,” she exclaimed. “Not about the trophy or the tournament, but just in myself. I think this was the key to everything. I’m so happy. I’m really so happy.”
After defeating Samantha Stosur of Australia, 6-4 7-6 (7-2), Schiavone rolled over and kissed the red clay. She still had dirt in her white shirt when she hugged her championship trophy.
This is Stosur’s and Schiavone’s first Grand Slam finals appearance.
