Serena Williams Wins 4th Wimbledon Title

Serena WilliamsSerena Williams ended two weeks of superb tennis display at the All England Club with aplomb, as the world no.1 won her second-consecutive and fourth overall Wimbledon title with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Vera Zvonareva of Russia.

Williams, who did not drop a set in the tournament, was never threatened throughout the match, although Zvonareva put up a fight in the first six games of the first set. However, the top-seeded Williams took nine of the final 11 games to win her fifth title in the last eight Grand Slam events.

A Williams has now won in Wimbledon nine of the last 11 years, with Serena’s sister, Venus, winning five during that stretch. Serena also established a new ace record in the tournament with 89, breaking the previous best of 72 she set last year.

Meanwhile, the men’s final on Sunday will feature world no.1 Rafael Nadal against 12th seed Tomas Berdych. Nadal secured a ticket to the final with a straight-sets victory over British hope Andy Murray in their semifinal match, 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. Berdych, on the other hand, reach the final with a 6-3, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 win over Nova Djokovic.
